Restaurants Buy Cook County Jail Inmate Gardeners’ Produce (Video)

Why aren't ALL states and counties doing programs like this?

With official certification, 26 inmates from the Cook County Jail are now "master gardeners."

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart certified the inmates at a ceremony Thursday morning with some of the city's top chefs.

The program that allows low-risk inmates to garden has been going on for 17 years.

Up to this point, the produce has been donated to food banks, but now restaurants like Charlie Trotters and Publican will start buying the produce too.

It's hoped the program will help inmates find jobs once they rejoin the work force.
